Sandra Curtis-Powell has been a
dog nut nearly all of her life (just ask her family). She showed
her first dogs (Boxers) when she was eleven. While her children
were young, she bred field trial Beagles. In the early 1970's,
she began breeding and showing Bullmastiffs in both Obedience and
Conformation. She has finished 9 breed champions, 8 Companion
Dogs, 2 Companion Dogs Excellent, and a Utility Dog,
Puckerbrush
Time I Get To Phoenix UD, in this breed plus breeding several
more that were owned by others.
In 1989 and 1990, she began to teach obedience professionally. At about the same time she began to look around for a smaller breed to train and show because the Bullmastiffs were becoming a bit much to deal with due to size and and weight. First came Rebecca of Tantalon, CGC, "Becky", the West Highland White Terrier, then Briagha the Bearded Collie and finally Pebbles the Australian Terrier and another Bearded Collie, Pookie, and all of their training and showing (3 more conformation champions, two more CDs and another CDX). She is now undertaking another Australian Terrier that we call Fang,( Now Champion Fang, RN), and Fang's Cousin, Travis the Terror (also a champion).
Sandra has recently become an AKC Provisional Rally Judge. This is a new AKC Venue that will, hopefully, bring new trainers into our sport. She also enjoys a little bit of agility, freestyle, and tracking with her dogs. She spends a fair amount of time grooming the Beardies and the Aussies. She gardens and raises orchids. She is married to the occasional computer guru Louis Powell, has 2 children of her own and 4 stepchildren (who now have 6 step-grand-kids); And she is the grandmother of Keaton, age 7 years.
